Wanna know the #1 way to stay stuck in pretty much anything?

Let your comfort zone run the show!

We’ve all heard the term comfort zone bandied about but do we really know what it looks like, sounds like, and feels like when it’s operating? Do we know when it’s leading us around by the nose, stringing us along,  sitting in the driver’s seat of our lives?

You see, your comfort zone is this lovely part of us who’s only job is to make sure we don’t change.

Its sole purpose is to maintain the level of comfort we are used to, even if those circumstances are not desirable at all.

Our comfort zone is like the thermostat in our house. If we set it at sixty-five degrees and have a particularly cold day, the thermostat will kick into action to maintain the temperature of the house.

This means that when we begin to make changes in our lives our internal thermostat will kick into high-gear and try to prevent any attempts we make to do things differently.

How do we get un-stuck and not let our comfort zone run our lives?

1. Understand that your comfort zone is very sophisticated. It will do whatever it takes to keep you from doing things it perceives as threatening. If our thermostat is set at “broke” it will do everything it can to keep us “broke”. If you don’t have the relationship, role, career that you long for, your thermostat is set at “don’t have”. Sometimes simply knowing what that sneaky little bugger is up to is enough.
2. Begin to recognize what your comfort zone looks like, feels like, and sounds like. When things starting feeling rough and like you’re banging your head against a wall, chances are your comfort zone has taken charge. Take a deep breath. Your discomfort is actually a good sign that you are changing and of course your comfort zone doesn’t like that. So it kicks up a stink.
3. Give your comfort zone a chance to say what it needs to. Call a friend and ask them to play “devil’s advocate” for your comfort zone. Give yourself five minutes to let your comfort zone talk. Let it defend, make excuses, and try to convince your friend with its reasons for “staying exactly where you are” and why “nothing’s working”. Your friends job is to poke holes in everything your comfort zone has just said.
4. Do one scary action each day. Resistance to change is natural. When we avoid finishing a project, become nervous about making a phone call, procrastinate, or do a thousand other things besides the one action we know we need to take, it simply means that we care about the outcome.  “Feel the fear and do it anyways”. Use all that energy you are currently putting into ‘avoiding’, ‘procrastinating’, ‘doing’, or ‘fearing’, and put it into taking action that keeps you moving forward. And please, dear hearts, you don’t have to do the biggest, scariest action you have on your plate. Even a small one can help shift you out of ‘comfort zone’ mode.

The next time you feel like your banging your head against a wall, beating yourself up for not doing the scary action, take a deep breath and celebrate!

Celebrate because you know you are changing! And ultimately, even through the discomfort, you will begin to re-set your thermostat to the life you truly desire.

You each have something very special and unique to share with the world.

I know it’s cliche and we truly are the mirrors for society!

What ARE you here to do as an actor????? What is your intention?

What GIFT have you come to share? What do you long to pass on to others through your acting?

We can become so lost in the “business” of the “business” that we forget there’s a reason, a purpose, behind why we wanted to become actors in the first place.  You’ve been disappointed to often by the ‘part that got away’, the role you didn’t get cast for, the endless rounds of auditions that seem to get you nowhere, except for more auditions.

It’s in those times of frustration and disappointment that your passion, your purpose, your longing, Your WHY! as an actor will keep you going!

That’s when you dig down and find the strength, the courage, the motivation to keep going. It’s when you connect with your most authentic self and your deepest gifts for the world. That’s when you know the meaning behind the actions. And you know you’ll find a way to make it happen.

Remember you chose to be an Actor and you made that choice over the thousands of others for a REASON! Think of all the lives you will touch. Think of how much better the world will be because you didn’t give up! (even if you are in the last seat of the last row!

This blog is based on the work I did for my Master’s Thesis The Spiritual Actor – The Power of Spirituality in Acting and Actor Training using Spiritual Practices and Native American Animal Totems.

Acting, at its best, is spiritual work and is at the heart of acting.

I would go so far as to suggest spirituality IS the heart of acting and it is sorely missing in our “cut and thrust” industry.

We spend so much time and effort on our craft, auditioning, and the ‘business’ of acting, that we sometimes forget why we are actors in the first place, what our hearts and spirits are longing to do with this wonderful art.

When we bring our spirits, our hearts, our authentic self to acting, we can more powerfully connect to ourselves, our partners onstage, and our audiences. That is when the deepest transformation can take place.

This is the deeper process and result of what we, as actors, do.

Spirituality can and does enhance any other actor training with which it is combined.

I hope this will become a space for dynamic exploration of

• what it means to including spirituality in acting and actor training

• what processes and tools are you using to engage your spirit in your craft

• how can we use those tools in grounded and practical ways in our training
